Angus
The dominant British beef breed in U.S. commercial herds, valued for marbling, maternal traits, and a deep genetic base.
Overview
Angus cattle are polled, typically black (Red Angus is a color variant with similar type). They excel in carcass quality grids that reward marbling and in cow-calf programs that need moderate frame, fertility, and calf vigor. Red and Black Angus share type; coat color affects heat absorption more than genetics of growth.

Growth

Temperament
Generally docile with good herd manners; individual variation requires normal handling facility standards.
Climate
Thrives in temperate and cold climates. Black coats can raise heat load in hot, humid full sun — prioritize shade and water. Red Angus may handle heat slightly better cosmetically but still need heat management.
Feed
Efficient on pasture and in feedlots. Match energy to mature size; over-conditioning cows hurts fertility.
Pasture
Well suited to rotational and continuous British-type pasture systems. Good candidates for grass-fed branded programs when genetics and finish targets align.
Management
Use EPDs for calving ease, milk, and carcass. Watch pinkeye and foot problems like any British breed. Crossbreeding with continentals is common for terminal calves.
