Cattle Ranch Calc tools are engineered using peer-reviewed agricultural extension models, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) standards, and university ruminant nutrition formulas.

1. Stocking Rate & Animal Unit Equivalents (AUM)

Standard AUM math defines 1 Animal Unit (AU) as a 1,000 lb mature beef cow consuming approximately 26 lb of dry matter per day (or 780 lb per month). Larger modern cows (1,300–1,400 lb) consume proportionally more dry matter (~33.8 lb/day, equating to 1.3 to 1.4 AUE).

Carrying Capacity = (Grazeable Acres × Forage Yield × Harvest Efficiency) ÷ (Cow Weight × 0.026 × Grazing Days)

2. Break-Even & Cost of Gain (COG)

Feedlot and stocker break-even models compute all direct cattle acquisition expenses, carrying interest, death loss reserve, health processing, and feed costs against net pay-weight after standard pencil shrink.

Break-Even ($/lb) = Total Invested Cost Per Head ÷ [Expected Sale Weight × (1 - Shrink %)]

3. Bovine Gestation Timeline

Bovine gestation ranges from 281 days (Angus) to 292 days (Brahman/Zebu influence). The platform calculates critical veterinary milestones including 18–24 day estrus return, 30–45 day ultrasound checks, and 60-day dry-off/scour vaccination windows.
