Start with dry matter, not bale count
A cow’s need is driven by dry matter intake, usually estimated as a percent of body weight. A 1,300 lb cow at 2.5% BW needs about 32.5 lb of dry matter per day — before you convert to as-fed hay with moisture and waste.
Convert DM to delivered hay
If hay is 12% moisture, it is 88% dry matter. Delivered as-fed pounds = DM need ÷ 0.88. Then add feeder waste. Ground feeding and poor rings can erase a large share of purchased tons.
