Step 1 — Measure the land you can actually graze
Use grazeable acres only. Deduct dense brush, open water, rock, and permanent sacrifice areas. Inflated acreage is the fastest way to invent fake carrying capacity.
Step 2 — Estimate forage yield honestly
Yield is pounds of dry matter per acre for the season you care about. Use local Extension ranges, clipping data, or prior ranch records. Then apply a drought cut if the year is already behind.
Step 3 — Apply harvest efficiency and reserve
Not all grown forage is consumed. Many rangeland plans use ~25% harvest efficiency under continuous grazing and higher under intensive rotation. A management reserve is an extra holdback for residual goals or contingency.
