Border Collie (cattle work)
The classic strong-eyed herding dog, most famous on sheep but also used on cattle when carefully trained. Intense focus and trainability — poor fit for idle pet homes.

Origin
Developed on the England–Scotland border for sheep. Cattle use is common in some regions but requires dogs that can take pressure without panicking stock or themselves.
Working style
Powerful eye, crouch, and balance. On cattle, handlers often select harder-nosed lines and teach grip judiciously. Not every sheep-bred BC is suited to heavy cattle.
Temperament notes
Extremely intelligent and work-obsessed. Can develop anxiety or compulsive behaviors without a job. Sensitive to harsh handling.
Size
Medium; athletic rather than bulky. Weight varies widely by working line.
Best fit
- Handlers skilled in herding training
- Farms that can provide daily structured work or sport
- Mixed livestock where eye and balance matter
Considerations
- Many BCs are overwhelmed by aggressive cattle if started poorly
- Health: hips, CEA/eye issues — ask for testing
- Not “just a family dog” for most high-drive lines
Ranch tips
- Start on quieter cattle; protect young dogs from being run over
- Don’t expect sheep-trial style alone to translate to feedlot pressure
- Heat and long gathers: plan water and rest like you would for the crew
